I believe Orangeville can take a more thoughtful, consistent approach to community safety by bringing data, professional studies and residents' lived experiences together.
Traffic data tells us what is happening on our roads—but it doesn't always tell the whole story. I want to see community concerns considered alongside traffic studies, collision data, pedestrian activity, school locations and other evidence when determining where safety improvements are needed.
Consistent Safety Around Schools
I will advocate for a more consistent, evidence-based approach to traffic calming around schools and other areas where pedestrians and vehicles regularly interact.
Rather than treating each location as an isolated problem, we should develop clear criteria for when measures such as traffic calming, crossings, signage, sidewalks or other safety improvements should be considered.
Better Connected Trails & Active Transportation
I also want to explore how we can better connect Orangeville's trails, sidewalks and active transportation routes so residents have practical alternatives to driving.
The goal isn't to put cars against pedestrians or cyclists. It's to design a community where they don't have to compete for the same space.
Better connections can make it easier for people to walk, cycle and enjoy Orangeville while improving safety and reducing unnecessary vehicle trips.
